A European project for digital steelmaking
SMARTChain has assembled a consortium of 14 partners from seven European countries, comprising producers, users, research centres and universities. The project aims to develop advanced digital tools that can securely and intelligently connect all stakeholders in the steel supply chain, supporting collaboration based on shared data.
Data and traceability: How the Pittini Group contributes to SMARTChain
The Pittini Group is joining the SMARTChain project by providing a case study focusing on traceability and the analysis of production processes. This study will involve Acciaierie di Verona and SIAT. The aim is to develop a platform capable of collecting detailed data on billets and wire rods, as well as linking process parameters to the performance of the finished product. This will improve quality control and supply chain management.
To enable continuous monitoring, SIAT utilises an inline defect sensor to detect imperfections on rolled products in real-time. Additionally, Acciaierie di Verona has improved temperature control along the rolling line and updated its data collection platform to include casting and rolling information.
Digitalisation and sustainability across the supply chain
SMARTChain is a significant step towards smart factories, in which digitalisation is a key tool for managing and utilising large volumes of data. Intelligent processing of this data enables plant productivity to be optimised and the quality of the finished product to be improved. The project also reduces waste and CO₂ emissions. The introduction of more objective and systematic measurements has made it possible to identify defects in production more quickly, allowing for targeted corrections that improve both the efficiency and sustainability of the manufacturing process.
A pilot project for Group-wide integration
Thanks to the experience acquired through the SMARTChain project, we can now extend digital integration to other production sites. Our vertical supply chain structure is one of the core strengths of the Group and enables us to trial these solutions on a larger scale. This improves efficiency, traceability and quality across the production cycle.
