The first dry slag granulation plant for white slag is put into operation

A new solution turns steelmaking residues into a resource for the cement industry, supporting sustainability and the circular economy.

At the Ferriere Nord plant of the Pittini Group, operational tests have officially begun on the new dry slag granulation (DSG) plant for white slag — the first of its kind in the world.

The system, developed over more than two years of engineering and based on patented solutions, is an important technological innovation in the treatment of steelmaking residues. The plant allows the recovery and reuse of white slag, a solid residue generated in the ladle during the steel refining process.

Through a rapid air-cooling process, the slag is transformed into a stable granular material that is easy to transport and can be reused as a secondary raw material, especially in the cement industry.

The new material is called Siderlime®, an artificial aggregate of steelmaking origin (SMS). It can be used as a filler or blend in bituminous mixtures to partly replace natural aggregates, as well as in other construction applications.

The commissioning of this plant marks an important step in the environmental strategy of the Pittini Group. It will contribute to:

  • reduce internal dust,
  • improve residue management,
  • promote the reuse of raw materials,
  • strengthen commitment to a production model based on circular economy principles.

A new concrete result of the Zero Waste policy of the Group.
