The smart project to reduce the noise impact of steel mills

In 2023, the European RFCS project called SILENCE was launched. The aim of this research is to reduce noise impact, focusing on the use of acoustic sensors and artificial intelligence to monitor noise emissions generated by steel mills.

Reducing the impact of noise: the SILENCE Project

The SILENCE Project is at the forefront of an innovative approach to reducing the environmental impact caused by noise emissions. Using acoustic sensors (sound level meters) for real-time monitoring and artificial intelligence (AI), the project is aimed at applying advanced screening to correlate steel production processes and weather conditions with the noise levels emitted to the surrounding community. SILENCE implements innovative sensors and data analysis techniques to improve the mapping of noise emissions, which in turn leads to the selection of measures aimed at improving the quality of life in areas close to steel plants.

The key role of Ferriere Nord in noise reduction

Steelworks along with their energy-intensive activities and heavy equipment play a key role in the SILENCE project. Through the installation of acoustic sensors for real-time monitoring, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), the project aims to reduce the environmental noise impact of steel mills. At the Ferriere Nord steel mill in Osoppo, two new sound level meters were installed inside the EAF building and another three outside near the scrap yard, helping to collect data to develop and implement new technologies and processes that reduce noise generated during steel production and processing operations.

In addition to the Ferriere Nord steelworks, the SILENCE partner consortium also includes another steel mill in Belgium as a case study.
At Ferriere Nord, in the town of Osoppo, a new sound level meter was installed inside the EAF building and three others were installed outdoors around the perimeter of the production site.

A future with less noise and more sustainability

The participation of Ferriere Nord in the SILENCE Project creates an opportunity to develop innovative solutions to reduce industrial noise pollution. By cooperating and using Artificial Intelligence systems to analyse the acoustic data collected, steel mills have the opportunity to streamline their operations and further reduce noise emissions, thereby promoting a better quality of life for their employees and the surrounding communities. By actively participating in studies and evaluations within the project, Ferriere Nord will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the measures that have been implemented and also share these experiences and best practices with other companies.
