The roads of the Giro d’Italia are being resurfaced with Granella® Pittini

An advanced maintenance project on the road network of Friuli-Venezia Giulia which, through the use of Granella® Pittini, improves the safety, durability and sustainability of the infrastructure along the routes of the Giro d'Italia.

When the Giro d’Italia passes through Friuli-Venezia Giulia, every detail counts. The quality of the asphalt, the evenness of the road surface and the level of grip are crucial factors for the safety and performance of the riders. Yet those very same roads, under the spotlight of the Giro, are the ones that connect regions and communities every day.

The Friuli stage of the 2026 Giro is particularly significant: the 20th stage, from Gemona del Friuli to Piancavallo, will take place on the 50th anniversary of the 1976 earthquake, taking on a strong symbolic significance of remembrance and rebirth.

It is against this backdrop that the maintenance works carried out by FVG Strade in the provinces of Trieste, Gorizia and Udine, and by EDR in Udine, are taking place. This wide-ranging project focuses on a specific objective: innovating materials to improve performance, thanks to the collaboration between Adriastrade and the Pittini Group.

Advanced maintenance for a more secure network

Road surfaces are subjected to constant stress, which over time compromises their grip and evenness. The works involved milling, restoring the road’s geometry and laying high-performance asphalt mixes.

In the province of Udine alone, over 180,000 square metres of road surfacing have been upgraded using SMA (Splittmastix Asphalt) mixes, a type of high-performance asphalt designed to ensure greater durability and safety compared to conventional asphalt mixtures…

Pittini’s contribution with Granella®

During the resurfacing works, Granella® Pittini was used, a product derived from the recycling of EAF furnace slag. Its use improves grip between tyres and the road, increases the durability of the road surface and helps to reduce rolling noise. At the same time, it represents a sustainable choice, perfectly in line with the principles of the circular economy.

Infrastructure and the local area

The project was developed in accordance with the Minimum Environmental Criteria, involving the recovery and reuse of milled road surfacing and careful management of site operations.

The roads of the Giro d’Italia thus serve as a concrete example of how infrastructure and the local area can evolve together. Safe, high-performance surfaces are not only essential for major sporting events, but also represent a lasting asset for everyday travel.
