The circular economy of steel
Worldwide, 85% of steel is recycled, making it the most reused material of all. But why steel? What makes it so special? First, unlike other materials, it is easier to sort, both at home and at recycling centres. It also has the advantage that it is 100% recyclable for an unlimited number of times, without any loss of its properties.
Steel mills play a key role in the life cycle of this material. The production of steel with an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) uses recycled ferrous materials as the raw material for the manufacture of new products. All the products of the Pittini Group are manufactured from recycled steel, thanks to the three steel mills located in Italy.
Steel Recycling in Italy
Italy is showing increasing sensitivity and commitment to the issue of recycling. According to data collected by RICREA in fact, in 2023 a record rate of 87.8% was recorded for the recycling of steel packaging, such as cans and tins, spray cans, caps, capsules…
The amount of material recycled exceeds 428,000 tonnes, with an average per capita collection of 4.8 kg. The targets set by the European Union for the recycling of packaging made from this material were therefore exceeded well in advance: 70% by 2025 and 80% by 2030.
