Accreditation and Quality Control: an insight into the operations of the Pittini Group laboratories

Daniela Ragogna, head of the laboratory at Ferriere Nord, tells us how she manages analyses and monitors processes to ensure the quality standards required by clients. Her passion for numbers and her collaboration with the various departments of the company make her role both dynamic and strategic.

What are the activities and objectives of the laboratories of the Pittini Group?

The Pittini Group has three main laboratories located in Osoppo, Potenza and Verona, where the steel plants are located. Chemical, geotechnical, mechanical and metallographic analyses are performed. The laboratory at Ferriere Nord in Osoppo is the central laboratory and it is also responsible for the chemical analysis of most of the materials used in the other plants. Analyses are carried out at all stages of the production cycle, from raw materials to intermediate and finished products. These analyses serve both market needs and the process control needs of our technologists, who use the data to fine-tune production processes.

What does it mean in practice that the laboratories of Ferriere Nord and Siderpotenza are accredited by the national body Accredia?

The laboratories of Ferriere Nord and Siderpotenza are accredited by Accredia according to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard, which defines and regulates the general requirements for the competence of testing laboratories. Accredia accreditation demonstrates that the laboratory meets both the technical and management requirements necessary to provide accurate and technically valid data and results within the scope of accreditation. It also requires a clear and well-defined organizational structure and a dedicated management system to ensure independence and impartiality. Accreditation is therefore a guarantee of the competence of the laboratory, in addition to its independence, and impartiality. Currently, Ferriere Nord has nine accredited tests, with continuous development and expansion.

What are your main activities in the laboratory?

Currently, I mainly coordinate the analytical activities performed in the laboratory, in addition to performance analysis and process monitoring. I ensure that the quality of the laboratory is maintained.

What are the most stimulating and rewarding aspects of your daily work?

What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to interact with many departments within the company and to work with a variety of analytical techniques and matrices. I also appreciate being able to apply my passion for numbers through data analysis techniques to improve the efficiency of laboratory processes.
